Screen Grab #10

This is the ending scene and it is of a long shot. It show a isolated area. The mise en scene of the river and trees are calming. But with the shot only showing the back of the character creates a mysterious feeling, making the audience think who is he and why is he there?

Screen Grab #9

. Its off an long shot. The darkness of the person and the buildings make the blue sky stand out more. This scene is of the person walking up an empty street which shows the isolation of this person and the place itself.

Screen Grab #8

Screen Grab #7

The reason we used a long shot here is to show the isolated surroundings. It shows the audience that the character is alone. The trees surround the character makeing it seem like he is enclosed and can't escape the situation he is in.

Screen Grab #6

This is of a medium shot . By only seeing the back of the character it creates tension and mystery. An the mute lighting adds depth to the location also the character

Screen Grab #5

This is of a medium shot it show a male getting off the train. we can't see any of the location in the image so this add a mystery as we don't know where this male is.

Screen Grab #4

This is a medium shot of a male walking. But with the trees covering him make it look like he is dominated by them and this makes him look week.

Screen Grab #3

This is of a long shot as it show the location. The content of the image is peaceful with the subtle colour tones this make it feel calm. We feel confused as we don't know exactly what is happening in the image

Screen Grab #2

The shot is of a long shot. We see the a male on the ground looking hurt. The colour is quite dark and this make the audience feel sympathy for the male. The trees in the background surrounding the character dominating him.

Screen Grab #1

the reason why we used an extreme close up is to emphesise the blood on the protagonist face.this creates the audience to feel sympathetic for him, alo It was used right at the begining because this grabs the audience attention.

Main Task: Killing For Leisure

Looking back at the preliminary , taskwhat do you think you have learnt from the progression from it to the full task?

In the preliminary task we learnt how to do different shots e.g. close up of feet running over the camera. This was helpful in the main task as when we did a close up of the main characters feet walking past the camera we were able to make the shot more interesting, this also gives it a more professional look. With the continuity we made sure the actors were wearing the same costumes and making sure the makeup is the same as previous. The weather when we filmed the main task was dry so when filming it had to be like that if it rained or if it was too sunny the continuity would be awful. Lucky it was consistent on the days we started to film. With the preliminary we shot inside so the lighting was the same every time. With the main we had to look at the weather and see if we could film.
In preliminary as it was shot over several days different clothes warn. So we made sure to improve on this in the main task by wearing the same clothes and the makeup was the same

In the preliminary task we learnt that if we didn’t use a variety of shots than the film wouldn’t be interesting and the audience would lose interest quickly. In our main task, we used a varity of shots. eg long shots to show the island and where the main charater was stranded. exteme close ups showing that something is important.
In the preliminary we didn't use any usic or voice over. With this it seem boring so in our main taskWe also learnt how to put a voice over on the film with the music playing behind it; this enabled us to make the music flow throughout the film. The steady cam in main gives a more steady shot whereas in the preliminary when the (Protagonist) victim walks in it was shaky.

The setting in the main task was more believable than college and more authentic so we stepped up the quality of setting.
.
We learnt how to frame a shot E.g. the rule of third to see which side looks best. In the preliminary we didn’t really think about this.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Throughout filming our main task we have learnt how to use the steady cam affectively to make the shots we filmed more authentic. By using the steady cam it helped us get a smooth looking piece of work as the camera doesn’t jerk around as much. As when we first started filming we didn’t use the steady cam and when we did that the filming was more difficult and consequently it was shaky.

We have learnt how to film what shots work best with a specific scene. When filming we did various different shots like close up, medium shot, long shots. Over the shoulder and also we positioned the camera at different angles. So by doing this we repeated scenes a few times, as when we edit, it will look a lot better when there is quite a few shots in a scene. By using the rule of third we realised what position the shot looked best.
During the editing of the film we learnt how to cut a shot without affecting the whole shot. This way we could always come back to it later to change it or to use a different part of the shot.

To make it look more like the beginning of a film we put titles on, about who directed it, who starred, who edited, and who produced and we positioned them in a certain way so they don’t disrupt the image and distract the viewer and we learnt what colour looked best and one that is noticeable but yet again isn’t distracting.

We also learnt we could use different transitions from one scene to the next to give the film variety e.g. we a used fade in and fade out transition where other transitions weren’t possible to use. We also used a non-additive edit to fade one shot into another without fading to black, this gave the film variety and made it seem more authentic.
We also used audio transitions to fade one sound into another without the music stopping altogether. This was extremely helpful for when the voice over came on as it didn’t play all the way through the opening scene. Also it was helpful for when the title came on as we used a different sound other than the piano music that did play all the way through the opening scene. This enabled us to fade in the new piece of music seamlessly giving a sense of authentication about the film.

The video is of the deleted scence. They are of shots that we didn't use mainly because the camera work wasn't good.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

I think our target audience for this film would be male teenagers. I think this genre of film would interest most of the male teenage population as most of this target audience are interested in video games that resemble this type of genre. I think our film captures a sense of violence and suspense that appeals to our target audience and their interests. I think it could appeal to a small group of females as this genre of film doesn’t fit the stereotypical genre the majority of the female population would go to the cinema to watch.
Our film would mainly interest young/ middle age males. Males who are in to their drama and thriller type films. Although woman could be interested and we shouldn’t stereotype as older people may enjoy watching thriller films.

How Did You Attract/ address your audience?

Starting we have an extreme close up of a male lying on the floor with blood on his face. This straight away attracts the audience as they wonder what has happened to him. Also this helps define the genre. We used orchestral piano music which is quite mysterious; this brings suspense to the audience as they do not know what is happening. And with the voice over saying disturbing things about killing, this creates a puzzling situation as it makes the audience think ‘did this male hurt the other person?’
With the Cross cutting to different scenes which juxtapose against each other, make you think what’s happening and how are they related to each other.
The editing is quick and this grabs the audience attention.

What kind of media institution would distribute your media product and why?

I think that maybe 20th Century Fox may be interested in distributing our film as they distributed the film 28 days later and this is the film we based our main task on. 28 days later is also a thriller and 20th century fox have distributed many thrillers including; hide and seek, the x-men trilogy and many more. This company may be based in US but is a worldwide distributor. They are quite a large conglomerate but they distributed 28 days later which is a low budget film of only £8 million. This could be the same budget set for our film.

Also I believe that Universal Pictures could be interested in distributing our film as they distribute quite a few of Working Title films, an independent British production company. They also distributed the film ‘The Wolfman’ which is also the same genre to our film.

Also the film Shawn of the Dead this is a low budget film and they were distributed by United International Pictures (UIP) The film may be a rom/com but it is a low budget British film, so therefore UIP would be interested in distributing our film.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I think our media production represent teenagers as it is a thriller based on 28 days later and that was aimed at a target audience of teenagers to thirty five year olds. The main characters are teenagers and this will instantly attract teenagers to watch the film. I think this film will attract all social groups in teenagers as there is a sense of mystery to it which appeals to all types of teenagers. I think this film will appeal more to male teenagers as the two main characters are males and it isn’t the stereotypical genre a female audience might watch. But we are not ruling out woman as some could also like it.
The social groups in question could be simply male and/ or female. It could be ethnic groups. Some projects also represent particular groups such as the mentally ill or homeless.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our chosen genre for our film is thriller; we decided to base it on the film 28 days later. We tried to imitate the sense of seclusion by filming the main character is a deserted park with no one around him. The mise-en-scene for our film is similar to that of 28 days later; the costumes are something an average person would wear, the sets we used are natural sets they are not made sets like in 28 days later, they used real London streets. The mise en scene we wanted an isolated looking area with many trees. This would make the scene look more realistic.

Like all thriller genres the opening scene has disturbing music that builds tension and suspense within the audience.
Through sound we kept it quite natural using ambient sound, the water from the stream, the wind. Again back to 28 days later when the man is deserted in London the sound is not much sound, it quite and creates tension, and that is how we wanted ours to be.
We used a voice over in the opening scene, something thriller films don’t usually have but we wanted to make it original. We used the poem ‘Education for Leisure’ by Carol Ann Duffy. We used some of the lines in her poem we felt were relevant to the genre of film we chose. This gave the film a sense of menace as with the editing of the film it went together really well. We also used the title of the poem as inspiration for the title of the film changing the word ‘Education’ for ‘Killing’ making the title of our film ‘Killing for Leisure.’
With the camera work, it relates to other thrillers as they use a juxtaposition of shots. So we used many different kinds of shots, we did some extreme close up to start with and we did some long shots which shows some of the setting. In 28 days later many long shots were used. Other shots were; Panning shots which were widely used in 'The Usual Suspect' beginning.
In editing we cross cut from 2 very different scenes like in 28 days later. And when adding non-diegetic sound, we wanted something that wouldn’t over power the scene so we used a simple orchestral piano. This helps create a mystery and this is very popular in thriller films.
The main inspiration to our film was 28 days later as we like their use of camera work and the plot so we developed something similar.

Storyboard

The two minute movie we made being viewed.

Today I had 5 of my friends viewing the beginning of our groups film; here are some of their comments.

Improvements that could have been made:

1 The acting of the cut man was bad due to the fact that even though he had just woken up after sleeping on the ground, he was fine he had a bit of a limp but he was climbing fine; walking on unstable terrain, his acting skills made it obvious that he was fine even though he had an apparent cut head.

2 If we had more time it would have been better if we could tighten one or two points of the film.

3 In parts it was a bit slow.

4 In one of the dialect parts it can’t be clearly heard.

5 It could have been better if there was the person's perspective; maybe a running scene.

Good parts which really work with the film:

1 The voice of the psychopath is very effective because it adds more depth to the film and gives a mystery to the film if he has attacked him or going to.

2 The music adds effect and drama to the piece

3 The different range of camera shots makes the film good.

4 The location works well.

5 The makeup looks good

6 The music works well with what you are seeing.

Would you change the location?

1 The place where this was filmed was out of the way and was too far to travel.

2 You could have maybe filmed inside instead of outside with unnatural light as the weather can be unpredictable.

The Storyboard

We drew the storyboard and coloured it in. We used the editing of the film to do this and the shots and transitions we used to help us finish it. The storyboard shows the transitions we used and the mise-en-scene, lighting. and what music we used in the final edidting of the film.

We used stick men instead of drawing actual people as it took less time and our group cant really draw that well so it looked better with stick people. We coloured in all of the storyboard to show what lighting and background there is in the film leaving no bit not coloured in. We also showed what the titles at the begining and the end of the film will look like.

I have scanned the storyboard onto my computer and tonight i will post it onto the blog so it is on the blog before the deadline.

Finishing Editing

We changed the music we originally chose from guitars and a drum beat to a simply piano piece. We did this because we felt that the first piece of music didnt fit with the genre of film we had chosen. The piano piece fit much better with the type of genre and made the film seem more dark.

tuesday's lesson

We have finished the editing of our film. So we have decided to do a directors commentary. We watched the beginning of our film in silent and just said what we saw with the mise-en-scene and how it make the audience feel. We used a voice over from all of us. We got this complete and next lesson we will put it on the blog.

Also we started creating a deleted scenes video. We simply got shots we didn't used and explained what was wrong with them and why we didn't use it. We did this through text. We will finish this off next lesson. And we will also do an audience feedback.
