Screen Grab #10

This is the ending scene and it is of a long shot. It show a isolated area. The mise en scene of the river and trees are calming. But with the shot only showing the back of the character creates a mysterious feeling, making the audience think who is he and why is he there?

Screen Grab #9

. Its off an long shot. The darkness of the person and the buildings make the blue sky stand out more. This scene is of the person walking up an empty street which shows the isolation of this person and the place itself.

Screen Grab #8

Screen Grab #7

The reason we used a long shot here is to show the isolated surroundings. It shows the audience that the character is alone. The trees surround the character makeing it seem like he is enclosed and can't escape the situation he is in.

Screen Grab #6

This is of a medium shot . By only seeing the back of the character it creates tension and mystery. An the mute lighting adds depth to the location also the character

Screen Grab #5

This is of a medium shot it show a male getting off the train. we can't see any of the location in the image so this add a mystery as we don't know where this male is.

Screen Grab #4

This is a medium shot of a male walking. But with the trees covering him make it look like he is dominated by them and this makes him look week.

Screen Grab #3

This is of a long shot as it show the location. The content of the image is peaceful with the subtle colour tones this make it feel calm. We feel confused as we don't know exactly what is happening in the image

Screen Grab #2

The shot is of a long shot. We see the a male on the ground looking hurt. The colour is quite dark and this make the audience feel sympathy for the male. The trees in the background surrounding the character dominating him.

Screen Grab #1

the reason why we used an extreme close up is to emphesise the blood on the protagonist face.this creates the audience to feel sympathetic for him, alo It was used right at the begining because this grabs the audience attention.

Main Task: Killing For Leisure

Looking back at the preliminary , taskwhat do you think you have learnt from the progression from it to the full task?

In the preliminary task we learnt how to do different shots e.g. close up of feet running over the camera. This was helpful in the main task as when we did a close up of the main characters feet walking past the camera we were able to make the shot more interesting, this also gives it a more professional look. With the continuity we made sure the actors were wearing the same costumes and making sure the makeup is the same as previous. The weather when we filmed the main task was dry so when filming it had to be like that if it rained or if it was too sunny the continuity would be awful. Lucky it was consistent on the days we started to film. With the preliminary we shot inside so the lighting was the same every time. With the main we had to look at the weather and see if we could film.
In preliminary as it was shot over several days different clothes warn. So we made sure to improve on this in the main task by wearing the same clothes and the makeup was the same

In the preliminary task we learnt that if we didn’t use a variety of shots than the film wouldn’t be interesting and the audience would lose interest quickly. In our main task, we used a varity of shots. eg long shots to show the island and where the main charater was stranded. exteme close ups showing that something is important.
In the preliminary we didn't use any usic or voice over. With this it seem boring so in our main taskWe also learnt how to put a voice over on the film with the music playing behind it; this enabled us to make the music flow throughout the film. The steady cam in main gives a more steady shot whereas in the preliminary when the (Protagonist) victim walks in it was shaky.

The setting in the main task was more believable than college and more authentic so we stepped up the quality of setting.
.
We learnt how to frame a shot E.g. the rule of third to see which side looks best. In the preliminary we didn’t really think about this.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Throughout filming our main task we have learnt how to use the steady cam affectively to make the shots we filmed more authentic. By using the steady cam it helped us get a smooth looking piece of work as the camera doesn’t jerk around as much. As when we first started filming we didn’t use the steady cam and when we did that the filming was more difficult and consequently it was shaky.

We have learnt how to film what shots work best with a specific scene. When filming we did various different shots like close up, medium shot, long shots. Over the shoulder and also we positioned the camera at different angles. So by doing this we repeated scenes a few times, as when we edit, it will look a lot better when there is quite a few shots in a scene. By using the rule of third we realised what position the shot looked best.
During the editing of the film we learnt how to cut a shot without affecting the whole shot. This way we could always come back to it later to change it or to use a different part of the shot.

To make it look more like the beginning of a film we put titles on, about who directed it, who starred, who edited, and who produced and we positioned them in a certain way so they don’t disrupt the image and distract the viewer and we learnt what colour looked best and one that is noticeable but yet again isn’t distracting.

We also learnt we could use different transitions from one scene to the next to give the film variety e.g. we a used fade in and fade out transition where other transitions weren’t possible to use. We also used a non-additive edit to fade one shot into another without fading to black, this gave the film variety and made it seem more authentic.
We also used audio transitions to fade one sound into another without the music stopping altogether. This was extremely helpful for when the voice over came on as it didn’t play all the way through the opening scene. Also it was helpful for when the title came on as we used a different sound other than the piano music that did play all the way through the opening scene. This enabled us to fade in the new piece of music seamlessly giving a sense of authentication about the film.

The video is of the deleted scence. They are of shots that we didn't use mainly because the camera work wasn't good.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

I think our target audience for this film would be male teenagers. I think this genre of film would interest most of the male teenage population as most of this target audience are interested in video games that resemble this type of genre. I think our film captures a sense of violence and suspense that appeals to our target audience and their interests. I think it could appeal to a small group of females as this genre of film doesn’t fit the stereotypical genre the majority of the female population would go to the cinema to watch.
Our film would mainly interest young/ middle age males. Males who are in to their drama and thriller type films. Although woman could be interested and we shouldn’t stereotype as older people may enjoy watching thriller films.

How Did You Attract/ address your audience?

Starting we have an extreme close up of a male lying on the floor with blood on his face. This straight away attracts the audience as they wonder what has happened to him. Also this helps define the genre. We used orchestral piano music which is quite mysterious; this brings suspense to the audience as they do not know what is happening. And with the voice over saying disturbing things about killing, this creates a puzzling situation as it makes the audience think ‘did this male hurt the other person?’
With the Cross cutting to different scenes which juxtapose against each other, make you think what’s happening and how are they related to each other.
The editing is quick and this grabs the audience attention.

What kind of media institution would distribute your media product and why?

I think that maybe 20th Century Fox may be interested in distributing our film as they distributed the film 28 days later and this is the film we based our main task on. 28 days later is also a thriller and 20th century fox have distributed many thrillers including; hide and seek, the x-men trilogy and many more. This company may be based in US but is a worldwide distributor. They are quite a large conglomerate but they distributed 28 days later which is a low budget film of only £8 million. This could be the same budget set for our film.

Also I believe that Universal Pictures could be interested in distributing our film as they distribute quite a few of Working Title films, an independent British production company. They also distributed the film ‘The Wolfman’ which is also the same genre to our film.

Also the film Shawn of the Dead this is a low budget film and they were distributed by United International Pictures (UIP) The film may be a rom/com but it is a low budget British film, so therefore UIP would be interested in distributing our film.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I think our media production represent teenagers as it is a thriller based on 28 days later and that was aimed at a target audience of teenagers to thirty five year olds. The main characters are teenagers and this will instantly attract teenagers to watch the film. I think this film will attract all social groups in teenagers as there is a sense of mystery to it which appeals to all types of teenagers. I think this film will appeal more to male teenagers as the two main characters are males and it isn’t the stereotypical genre a female audience might watch. But we are not ruling out woman as some could also like it.
The social groups in question could be simply male and/ or female. It could be ethnic groups. Some projects also represent particular groups such as the mentally ill or homeless.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our chosen genre for our film is thriller; we decided to base it on the film 28 days later. We tried to imitate the sense of seclusion by filming the main character is a deserted park with no one around him. The mise-en-scene for our film is similar to that of 28 days later; the costumes are something an average person would wear, the sets we used are natural sets they are not made sets like in 28 days later, they used real London streets. The mise en scene we wanted an isolated looking area with many trees. This would make the scene look more realistic.

Like all thriller genres the opening scene has disturbing music that builds tension and suspense within the audience.
Through sound we kept it quite natural using ambient sound, the water from the stream, the wind. Again back to 28 days later when the man is deserted in London the sound is not much sound, it quite and creates tension, and that is how we wanted ours to be.
We used a voice over in the opening scene, something thriller films don’t usually have but we wanted to make it original. We used the poem ‘Education for Leisure’ by Carol Ann Duffy. We used some of the lines in her poem we felt were relevant to the genre of film we chose. This gave the film a sense of menace as with the editing of the film it went together really well. We also used the title of the poem as inspiration for the title of the film changing the word ‘Education’ for ‘Killing’ making the title of our film ‘Killing for Leisure.’
With the camera work, it relates to other thrillers as they use a juxtaposition of shots. So we used many different kinds of shots, we did some extreme close up to start with and we did some long shots which shows some of the setting. In 28 days later many long shots were used. Other shots were; Panning shots which were widely used in 'The Usual Suspect' beginning.
In editing we cross cut from 2 very different scenes like in 28 days later. And when adding non-diegetic sound, we wanted something that wouldn’t over power the scene so we used a simple orchestral piano. This helps create a mystery and this is very popular in thriller films.
The main inspiration to our film was 28 days later as we like their use of camera work and the plot so we developed something similar.

Storyboard

The two minute movie we made being viewed.

Today I had 5 of my friends viewing the beginning of our groups film; here are some of their comments.

Improvements that could have been made:

1 The acting of the cut man was bad due to the fact that even though he had just woken up after sleeping on the ground, he was fine he had a bit of a limp but he was climbing fine; walking on unstable terrain, his acting skills made it obvious that he was fine even though he had an apparent cut head.

2 If we had more time it would have been better if we could tighten one or two points of the film.

3 In parts it was a bit slow.

4 In one of the dialect parts it can’t be clearly heard.

5 It could have been better if there was the person's perspective; maybe a running scene.

Good parts which really work with the film:

1 The voice of the psychopath is very effective because it adds more depth to the film and gives a mystery to the film if he has attacked him or going to.

2 The music adds effect and drama to the piece

3 The different range of camera shots makes the film good.

4 The location works well.

5 The makeup looks good

6 The music works well with what you are seeing.

Would you change the location?

1 The place where this was filmed was out of the way and was too far to travel.

2 You could have maybe filmed inside instead of outside with unnatural light as the weather can be unpredictable.

The Storyboard

We drew the storyboard and coloured it in. We used the editing of the film to do this and the shots and transitions we used to help us finish it. The storyboard shows the transitions we used and the mise-en-scene, lighting. and what music we used in the final edidting of the film.

We used stick men instead of drawing actual people as it took less time and our group cant really draw that well so it looked better with stick people. We coloured in all of the storyboard to show what lighting and background there is in the film leaving no bit not coloured in. We also showed what the titles at the begining and the end of the film will look like.

I have scanned the storyboard onto my computer and tonight i will post it onto the blog so it is on the blog before the deadline.

Finishing Editing

We changed the music we originally chose from guitars and a drum beat to a simply piano piece. We did this because we felt that the first piece of music didnt fit with the genre of film we had chosen. The piano piece fit much better with the type of genre and made the film seem more dark.

tuesday's lesson

We have finished the editing of our film. So we have decided to do a directors commentary. We watched the beginning of our film in silent and just said what we saw with the mise-en-scene and how it make the audience feel. We used a voice over from all of us. We got this complete and next lesson we will put it on the blog.

Also we started creating a deleted scenes video. We simply got shots we didn't used and explained what was wrong with them and why we didn't use it. We did this through text. We will finish this off next lesson. And we will also do an audience feedback.

Friday

Today we edited most of the film we got complete the music and the titles, with these on the fim look's a lot better. Conner came up with a good idea he though of an poem done by Carol Ann Duffy, which goes really well with what we are doing so we thought to do a voice over. Containing some of lines:

Education for Leisure

Today I am going to kill something. Anything.

I have had enough of being ignored and today

I am going to play God. It is an ordinary day,

a sort of grey with boredom stirring in the streets

I squash a fly against the window with my thumb.

we did that at school. Shakespeare. It was in

another language and now the fly is in another language.

I breathe out talent on the glass to write my name.

I am a genius. I could be anything at all, with half

the chance. But today I am going to change the world.

something’s world. The cat avoids me. The cat

knows I am a genius, and has hidden itself.

I pour the goldfish down the bog. I pull the chain.

I see that it is good. The budgie is panicking.

Once a fortnight, I walk the two miles into town

For signing on. They don’t appreciate my autograph.

There is nothing left to kill. I dial the radio

and tell the man he’s talking to a superstar.

he cuts me off. I get our bread-knife and go out.

the pavements glitter suddenly. I touch your arm.

The lines that are highlighted are the ones we are going to use. In next lesson we will put the voice over in certain part. While Conner was doing the voice-over Sophie came up with a good name for the film.' Killing for leisure.'

Friday & Tuesday, Editing.

For the past 2 lessons this week we have been editing the film together. We have tried putting various parts in places to see if it runs seamlessly a the moment it seems ok.

So far we have put all the parts on the timeline. And it roughly around 2 minutes long. Also in the past week we have tried out the soundtrack and we have got a sound which we think fits quite well. We needed help to transfer the music from garage band to Final Cut Pro. So far we have got some of the music on the timeline and will finish it next lesson.

Also we have started putting the titles on we have got the basic ones on right now, but once we have got all the titles on we will change the text size, colour and how it comes on the screen.

We also have to come up with a main title, in the previous lessons we have randomly suggested some like, The Unknown or The Traveller we have also came up with some others. We will decided maybe next lesson what it will be called as we hope to finish off the titles then.

Ms Getting suggested we should add a part with Conner on the phone or something as the film seemed a bit slow. We are still thinking on that idea, as if we decided to shoot that then we will have to miss a lesson to go film a tiny part which would be time consuming. When we have got all the music sorted hopefully by next lesson we will see how it is all together as the music play a big part and that’s in any film.

extras

here are some pictures we took while we were filming in Glossop.

tuesday filming

Today thought we had completed filming but my camera wasn't compatible with the Macs. therefore we had to re shoot. We all went down to Glossop to re film what we previously did in the holiday.
We got it all the filming complete, so next lesson we shall edit it together once we finished that we will put in the subtitles then we will do the soundtrack.

Filming during the holidays

During the holidays me and Rebecca went back up to film in Glossop due to family reasons Sophie couldn't make the filming but she had the camera so Rebecca used her camera which she brought and so we finished the filming so next lesson we will add the filming onto the computer and finish the film with music being developed by Connor so we will finish the film in the time set.

Thursday, 8 April 2010

Filming

Today me and Conner went filming. We tried to get hold of Sophie but we couldn't and this was a problem as she had the steady cam and the camera. To make sure the journey wasn't a waste of time I used my digital camera to video. Hopefully this will work on the computers at college.

The first part we filmed was around the train station then we went to the park to do some filming. We had no idea what to do so we just thought of ideas when we were there. Conner put some blood on a tree and I captured that. Then Conner went and sat on a bench looking over the water and I did a panning shot of that in several direction.

We also couldn't get hold of Nico so we couldn't film his part but we think we could get away without doing any more of his parts because we are adding Conner's part to it.
When we went back to the train station Conner had an idea to film the cars going past. and we filmed that for about 10 minutes but we will get a part of it and speed it up like time is passing. Then I filmed Conner coming off the train, we had to do this quickly as the train doesn't stay for long, also I filmed him walking out of the train station.
On the ride back I filmed him sitting down when the train was moving. I also got some shots outside the window but we didn't need that many as we already filmed some previously.

Hopefully we have completed the filming and all that is left now is the editing.

Friday, 26 March 2010

During the Holiday we will still be going out to film and get the best shots possible and hopefully our actor can make the filming sessions, we have had problems with him because he has had to work during the Friday filming sessions so hopefully we can get more shots of him.

EDITING

Today I stayed behind in collage while Sophie and Rebbecca went out and filmed some more. I stayed behind to make sure the movie was in order and to add music. Even though we have a bit more to film it will be easier to edit with music in the background so we can fit the film with the music.

Friday, Filming

Today we are all going to do the rest of the filming. We will be doing the shots Mr Lewis advised us to do. Doing shots of Conner on the train and we will do some more scenery shots that had to be redone as they were not successful the last time we filmed. We might also add some more as later in editing we can decide which shots look better and help create a seamless looking film.

Tuesday, Editing

Today we captured the parts me and Conner filmed on the Friday. We tried many different ways to see where the parts fitted in best. Looking at some of them there were some problems like, we could see people walking, when the place is to be seen as deserted. Cars went past and in a shot where we had a telephone box and in that part a reflection of Connor was visible. We decided we might redo this shot at a different angle this would help with the cars being seen and the reflections.

On the train back we took some shots of the streets at a high angle and over some fields. Some of the shots we could use while others didn't work out so well as you could see the reflection of the camera in the glass.

Mr Lewis watched what we had done so far and he gave us some suggestion. In a shot I got Conner on the train by mistake and Mr Lewis said we should continue with that. He said, As we are only filming an opening it doesn't have to make much sense. So we decided to do some shots of Conner on the train ( if that is possible) and cross cut it between Nico's part to make it seem like they should be meeting up, But Nico got attacked and left somewhere.
This Friday we will try this out if it is alright to film on the train. If it's not possible to do this, we will continue with our original idea.

Also today as we only had a little bit of work to capture it only took 1 lesson so in the 2nd lesson we went on to Garage Band and tried out different types of tracks we could use. We haven't decided what track we are going to use, as said we might change the plot of the film.

Monday, 22 March 2010

Friday,filming

Today we went and did some filming today. We only filmed some scenery. We filmed for brief shots of empty streets, which will show in the film that the place is deserted. We also filmed some shots in the park of the trees and the water.
Also we was going to do some shots in the church garden but the place is now locked which took the annoying as we was got Conner hand all blooded and dirty to do a close up of him opening it. So we had to cut it. If it is not possible to film in the church we will have to find another graveyard or we could change that scene to a run one. We have not yet decided.

Even though of this disadvantage we still had practice to applying the make-up and how we can use it to our full advantage to make it as believable as possible

Friday, 12 March 2010

Tuesday lesson

Today we uploaded what we had filmed the following week and edit part of it together. We also learnt how to fade scenes into the next frame, this helps make the film have continuity and it doesn't jerk one scene to the next. So far we have got most of the scenes together, but it is not 100% complete. There is a lot more editing and more filming to be done.
So far with our work that we have uploaded and edited we are close up to 2 min, So many of the scenes we have filmed have to be cut down and some others that seemed to drag it out were cut.
All of us did some contribution to the editing.
Also when we learnt how to fade scenes we tried some other to see what they were like and if they could be used, the majority of them didn't look right so we wouldn't use them.

Mr Lewis gave us some advice on how to help improve our work. Instead of just watching Nico walking we, could cross cut some scenery, of the trees and water. We decided to do this, so on Friday when we go to film we will film some scenery.

Images from 1st day of filming

Here are a few pictures took on location.

1st day of filming

At 12.00 we left college and took the train down to Glossop to do the filming. Sophie wasn't with us as she was not well. So it was me and Connor who did the filming while his friend Nico did the acting. We went down to manor park to do the first scene. Connor bought some fake blood to make it look like Nico had been attacked this make it more realistic.

The first scene we shot was a close up of Nico on the ground. We both filmed different shots and did shots at different angles. After that we filmed roughly in order the way the film was going to go. We had to repeat some shots as it didn't look right. We had a bit of trouble with the steady cam as when we was filming it was shaky, then we realised we could stick it on the tripod. After that it was much simpler. We filmed Nico walking through the tree and along the path and e filmed from many different angles to make it look more interesting and then later on in editing we would choose the best one.
We did not exactly follow the storyboard, as we forgot to film him washing the blood off him. And we decided not to film it otherwise we would have to change what we had done so far.

We got a good part of the filming done. We mostly got him walking through the field.
We spent just over two hours filming.

Whats going to happen?

Directing/Acting
For our main task all of us will be doing the directing and a friend of Conner’s, Nico will be doing the acting as the man who has amnesia. There is going to be a flash back scene where another person who is an antagonist, but there face can't be seen just the dark outline, with this Sophie will be doing it, this shot will only last a few seconds.

Costume
There is no certain costume that needs to be worn, its just casual clothes that can get dirty and that can get fake blood on. To make sure continuity is kept to a minimum we'll make sure he wears the same clothes.

Schedule
We have decided to do the filming on Friday when all of us have time to do it, and on Tuesday we will do the editing in lesson and also the blog.

2nd March

We weren't able to do any filming today. Therefore we decided to listen to different sounds that we could use in the task. Most of them didn't sound very good so we looked at sound on YouTube. We didn't make any decision to what we are going to use. When the filming and editing is done then we will add sound, that’s if its needed.

Friday, 26 February 2010

sound/camera

During the first start of our film we are going to use a varied different sounds and effects to make more of an atmosphere and to make the listener more alert to what is going on. The sounds we are going to use primarily are screams of people in the distance and when the man is being chased. Sirens of ambulances and fire engines but these sounds will be faint but still easily to hear so the sounds are in the distance. A main sound to add panic is the church bells ringing constantly throughout the flash back scenes and sounds of a heart beat when it goes quiet
But that effect has not been decided by the group. in the final editing we will choose what fits best.
However if we decide to change the plot of the film we will not uses these sounds as it wouldn't fit in

With the camera work we will try a various shots and angles like:

  • Long shots
  • medium shots
  • POV shots
  • Close ups
  • Tracking shots
  • High angle shots
  • low angle shots
  • extreme close ups
  • aerial shots

These are the majority we will do but we might do some more if its needed

main story

Our opening would be a black screen and screams and sirens will be going off. Quickly a shot of a man running he will scared as someone is chasing him, this will only last a few seconds then the screen will return black with one last scream.
This scream will seem to wake the man up. A close up of his eyes opening and the shot will pan out to show a man lying on the ground with blood on his face. The man will look confused as he won't be able to remember anything. He slowly gets up looks around here we will do some point of view shots. As he walks he stumbles over the uneven floor. Possibly with a close up of him tripping up.
When he is walking he will have some flash back to what happened
. This would be in a black and white filter, The man would be leaning over a grave stone and a creepy figure is behind him. A scream in the distances breaks his flash back and he looks scared. He gets up and paces through the trees. We will do many different angle shots of this as it will make it seem quicker and make it more interesting. When he breaks through the trees. He gets to a street which seems abandoned as no one is around. We would do a long shot and he would shout out 'Hello'. By doing a long shot it will show the empty street and shows he is alone.

Due to some circumstances might have had to change our story to work with the filming we have been able to shoot due to reasons like the weather and cast not being able to go and availability of them.

Locations

On Tuesday, we took a train down to Glossop as that is where we decided to do the main task. we went to a park which would be a good place to do filming as there are some parts to it that were surrounded by trees and there was a little island that was surrounded by water. This would be where the main character would wake up. We took several pictures of the area and we would decided later which area was better to film. Then we went down to a nearby church and we would also use that in our task. Here we would do a flash back sequences that will only last a few seconds. Then when we were at the church we all had a discussion to what we were actually going to film. We had a idea of a man having amnesia and wondering around not knowing where he is.

This is a location to where we are going to do our filming we are going to be filming in mannor park this is where the majority of the filming will take place. Also we will be filming at the near by church on church street

Final editing

During the final edit of the task we noticed that we had broken the 180 degree rule. This happened when we had a shot of the two people running through the door and then we had a shot of them coming through the same door. To cover up this we used a dissolve to show that some time had passed. We also used a dissolve when the girl being chased was waiting in the cafeteria for her friend to come to show that she had been waiting for a while. There was also a dissolve at the beginning when the boy was banging on the door and then walking through it, we used this to show that he had spent some time banging on the door trying to get in.

Preliminary task

Friday, 5 February 2010

a detailed, specific example of how we achieved match cuts during the editing process.

For us to achieve matched cuts we filmed different parts of the same scene, so when Rebecca and Connor was running we had a high angle and a low shot of them and we also filmed a close up shot of there feet going up the stairs. And when in editing we put these 2 clips together. By doing this it makes the scene look more interesting and it helped emphasised a chase and more importantly it helped us achieve a matched cut.

Give a detailed, specific example of we you have used a shot/ reverse shot combination in our film.

With the shot reverse shot we filmed a conversation between Rebecca and Sophie in the canteen. The shot was difficult to line up as someone head was in the way of the other. Even though it didn’t work out as accurately as we wanted it to we still used the clip, but when we are doing our main task we will make sure it is done right.
We put the camera behind Rebecca first, trying to get part of the back of her head in the shot and the full shot of Sophie. Once going through the whole part. Connor who was doing the filming switched side so the camera was over Sophie shoulder.
When editing to do the shot reverse shot when Sophie was talking the shot is on her then when Rebecca started talking the shot was on her. In editing we cropped the clip so this could be done.

In the filming and editing of our project, what worked well and what could have been improved?

There was some things that worked well like doing close ups of feet running up the stairs.
But there were also some things that didn’t work out well and what could have been improved was the continuity, as it took several days to film different clothes were worn so to improve the main task we should wear the same clothes to keep the continuity to a minimum. Also that didn’t work well was filming the conversation, trying to get 2 people in the shot was difficult as 1 persons head was in the way of the other so the shot reversed shot was not as good as it could be. For this to be improves when we do the main task we should move the camera to a more appropriate angle or sit in a different position.

What did we learn about the cameras and editing software during the preliminary task?

We learnt how to use the cameras, by turning on/off the camera putting in the tape and how to play back what just been filmed. We learnt how to do different shots like high angle , medium shots, ect. Also we learnt what shots worked and what didn’t and what shot looked better than others.
The editing software we used was final cut pro and with this it helped us put together the shots together so they look effective to do this we first connected the camera to the Mac and we created a folder in Final cut pro so what was loaded on the computer would always be there so we wouldn’t have to plug in the camera and start again each time. We were all unsure how use the software until Mr. Fordom explained it to us. He told us how to crop and slice the clip. We leant that how to crop the shots so they fitted with the previous scene.

Edit of Preliminary task

We decided not use music in the film as we felt that it wouldn't be effective and would drown out the sound of feet running. We felt that using no music creates tension as all you can hear is the pounding of feet as Rebecca and Connor are running and the dialogue where Rebecca explains she is being followed.

Editing

Today, Connor was editing the preliminary task. And Rebecca wrote the evaluation. We had to film extra scenes as we didn't have a speaking part in the film which was compulsory. Rebecca and i did the speaking part while Connor filmed. Here we used a shot reverse shot and a close up of sophie opening the door to the cafeteria( also opening the door was compulsory) and walking towards Rebecca. The editing of the film took a while as we had to refilm certain parts and it took a while to get the film onto the computer.

Editing

To edit the film we used final cut pro. We had trouble getting the film off the camera onto the computer as it kept freezing and it was taking a really long time loading onto the computer. We decided to do each scene separately so it didn’t take too much time to get the film onto the computer and we could decide which scenes we wanted to use. Mr Fordom showed us how to cut the scenes down further to the parts we wanted to have in the film and how to put them on the timeline.

Filming

We started to film Rebecca being chased up the stairs by connor. We used different camera angles including; low angle, high angle, long shots and close ups. We had to refilm shots of running up the stairs as they were all the same and seemed boring. We decided to have Rebecca and Connor running over the camera as they ran up the stairs to give a close up of their shoes as they ran past. I think this gave the film more excitement and the shots dont look repetative.

First day

Today we decided what genre and theme we were going to base our preliminary task on. We decided to do a thriller kind of genre with someone being chased. Rebecca is going to be the one that is being chased and Conner is going to be the one chasing her. i will be filming .
